Net4Science – First Year Activity Report (Year 2019)

During the first year of its existence,  the Net4Science academic spinoff  has focused its activity to grow its business in the marketplace panorama  by looking for direct collaborations with both regional, national and foreign companies and institutions. Such activity aims both to enhance the academic scientific research and to share its scientific skills with the production system through both the creation and the support of innovative and technologically advanced projects.

It has been an intense year full of commitments and with many satisfactions that have allowed the whole Net4Science team to accumulate a considerable experience and to increase their skills in several important fields.

The first relevant initiatives were launched just few months before Net4Science was set up. In October 2018, in fact, Net4Science was invited by the University “Magna Græcia” of Catanzaro to take part at the “Maker Faire” innovation event  in Rome (link) and, similarly, CalabriaInnova has chosen Net4Science to participate at the technology and innovation fair SMAU in Milan (link), as part of Phase 1 of the Start-up and Spin-off call of the Calabria Region (link), which was an opportunity  to interact with the business world in relation to the many applications of scientific research.

The formal establishment of Net4Science s.r.l took place on December 18th 2018 and at the same time the spinoff was included in the special register of innovative startups of the Chamber of Commerce of Catanzaro.

Then, during the first half of 2019, the Net4Science team was constantly involved in the completion of the Phase 2 of the above mentioned Start-up and Spin-off call of the Calabria Region call for proposals, which ended with the approval of European funding for the implementation of our business development plan (link).

During the first part of this period, Net4Science was involved, on behalf of COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), in the dissemination of scientific results related to the COST Action MuTaLig (Multi-target paradigm for innovative ligand identification in the drug discovery process), taking care of the website and producing the Chemotheca video tutorials (link).

Subsequently, from June 13th-15th 2019, Net4Science organized the international conference MedChem2019 – Paul Ehrlich Euro-PhD Network & MuTaLig COST Action meeting, which was held at the prestigious Complesso Monumentale San Giovanni of  and was attended by saw the presence of about 150 participants from 20 European countries, including high-level university professors and young researchers and companies with an outstanding role in the field of medicinal chemistry (link).

Between October and November 2019, Net4Science has participated to the SPIN – Scaleup Program Invitalia Network, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and dedicated to the business development of SMEs, innovative startup and university spinoff. Net4Science has been selected among the 70 companies that will be able to take advantage of the services of ELITE, a London Stock Exchange group company, which supports companies and guides following a process that brings them closer to capital markets and the world of open innovation (link).

Net4Science has concluded its first year of activity organizing the the Workshop entitled “Scientific Research and Enterprise Enhancement” – From agrifood to nutraceutical: competitive itineraries for the development of the territory, in which many companies belonging to the agricultural field took part and in which topics concerning the opportunities for the valorization of typical products and the use of public and private financial instruments for the economic support of business development projects were discussed (link).

Along with the above-mentioned actions, a consistent work in the field of the scientific research was carried out daily by the whole Net4Science team with tireless constancy, which constitutes the fundamental pillar of offered services. A very important investment in knowledge for the spinoff, translated in the first year alone into fourteen scientific publications on peer-reviewed journals that represent the current scientific portfolio of Net4Science (link).

After these first steps, not easy but full of satisfactions, Net4Science intends to follow the path taken with conviction and tenacity, setting itself the goal of making available to pharmaceutical companies and agrifood the knowledge accumulated over the years in the laboratories of the Medicinal Chemistry Group of the University “Magna Græcia” of Catanzaro.
